Puppy training or even training an adult dog is a major challenge to a lot of new dog owners. It doesn’t have to be that tough though, as long as you go about it with some preparation and a positive attitude.

An arrival of a new puppy is a huge event for the whole family. No matter how cute and cuddly, you should start training a puppy from the very first day.

This starts nearly inevitably with potty-training. As soon as you bring the new arrival home, you should try to take it outdoors. Remember that the excitement of a car journey and the unfamiliar environment, will have stressed the dog. And just like humans, it would be a wise thought to take the puppy out where it can adjust to this new environment and hopefully go for its first toilet break.

Take it to a designated toilet area and refrain from petting and playing because you don’t want the dog to associate this area with fun and games. If you manage to get the puppy to relieve itself for the first time outside instead of inside the house you are already one step ahead in your puppy training class shedule.

Say a small phrase you want the dog to associate with this area. Something like “potty place” or whatever, but keep it simple and use a cool voice so the dog can easily remember. Also do not forget to praise the dog afterwards. Show it affection and -certainly in the beginning- give it a small treat.

That is called positive reinforcement and it should not take long before the dog realizes that this is the area reserved for toilet breaks.
